Specs:
ASRock z77 extreme 4
I-5 3570k
8 gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 (i think it's the 1600)
Toshiba 2TB HDD
Seasonic 650w PS

I just burned out a GeForce GTX 570 (had it for a couple of years) and need to find a new graphics card. I have used Nvidia since I had issues with Radeon many years ago. I have been researching and it seems the Radeon cards outperform the Nvidia cards but tend to need more power and get a lot hotter. Is this true? I am looking at the R9 270X range. Would that work and what would be comparable in Nvidia. I am knowledgeable enough to get into trouble but smart to ask for help. Please advise on the following questions:
Nvidia or AMD? (heat and power consumption vs. stability as I have read?)
best options $400 or under preferably under $300 (GTX 760?,R9 270x?, GTX 770?)
any other information to help with this decision. I have to talk with my wife so I need to be as informed as possible to confuse her so she just says get whatever you want, lol!!!!

Thank you in advance

I have already looked at that but it seems it is lacking in diversity. I have reviewed multiple comparisons and they are biased. This review is biased to the AMD cards, as it doesn't talk about the heating, noise, and power consumption issues with AMD. I would like some real world experiences as well as technical knowledge and ability for my PSU to handle the card.

Check your local Craigslist for used R9 290 cards... I bought 2 for $225 each from a guy who was selling 10. He had been making Bitcoin rigs for people, but the market really dried up recently. People are dumping the R9 290's on ebay for around $220-250 as well. Bitcoin mining has become difficult enough that it probably isn't worth the cost of electricity...

I have them working fine in Crossfire with an 850W power supply, and I even received the warranty cards.

I bought the two R9 290's to replace my 6950 2GB card since a friend gave me three 27" 2560x1440 monitors. Gaming at 7680x1440 pretty much demands two 290's.
