Does overclocking an amd 8320 3.5 ghz to 4.0 ghz really make a difference?

I have an amd 8320 and I tried overclocking to 4 ghz . But I hardly found any radical changes in performance except for a rise in temperature.

I have an asus m5a97 r2.0 motherboard , asus bios has the manual / auto overclocking feature, it was set to auto mode on default. Should i keep it on auto mode or try overclocking? Does it really make a radical difference in performance?

Fog. Don't use the auto overclocking. Use the bios. Learn about all the bios settings. It will help you learn so much about computer hardware. Do this. Shut off the auto overclocking. Go into your bios and set the cpu multiplier to whatever it needs to be set at to run at 4.1 GHz. Probably 21. Make sure to shut off Turbo Boost or Core Boost in the bios. You should be fine at that setting with out having to touch the voltage. Then download Prime95 and run it to test for stability. Say like half an hour. Download CPU-Z, Hardware Monitor, Open Hardware Monitor. Get familiar with them. If you have a decent cpu cooler with good case airflow you should be in good shape. Running all your cores at 4.1 is significantly faster than 3.5. Do the math.
