I have been reading a lot of these horror stories about destroying their new components by static electricity discharging on your components. I also dont want to spend the money (even though straps doesnt cost much) to buy one. Can i just find a wire, tie it arround my wrist and stick it into ground through a window in my room.
My room is kinda in the cellar floor at my house and my floor in my room is actually lower than the ground out of my window by some 10 or 20 cm.

Or should i just take my PSU, plug it in (dont turn it on) and attach that wire to the PSU?.
Feel free to suggest.

When you try to uninstall or install components, you can just be bare footed, so that charge buildup goes to groung through feet. However components spoil under extreme worst conditions where lot of electricity is around like in electronic manufacturing unit.
I am doing all these for about 12 years without using anti static wrist wire. You can simply connect wire to your arm (large base area) and other end tie to computer cabinet (metal part). Some cabinets are coated with some non metallic coatings. So contact must be to metal.

But can i just plug in the PSU without turning it on and tie one end of metal wire to my arm and other attach to PSU so that static electricity goes to PSU and into grounding socket.
