Hey guys, Been offered a very cheap Reference design XFX R9 290 from a very close friend of mine. Barely been used and comes with a Receipt for Warranty purposes.

Now the issue I have with buying this card even at this break neck price is...Heat....

I don't want to fit a waterblock or spend a silly silly ammount of money sorting this out so my question is what's the best way?

I'm looking at something like this as a solution: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ARCTIC-Accelero-Xtreme-VRM-Cooling-DCACO-V800001-GBA01/dp/B00HHMJIIO/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1407680609&sr=8-17&keywords=R9+290

Would it make a significant difference?

Is it simply a case of removing the reference cooler and installing that on?

Thanks alot guys.

Reference design has single fan its function is just like hair drier, since it is closed so heat out flow is not very good. If your cabinet is pretty good for air flow, then their should not be any problem. R9 290 can go up to 95 with stock cooler. There is no need at present to replace it with cooler by spending 45. Wait and see if temp rises more then think of it. Secondly try to update the bios and driver of card if it can help

Yeh, I'd see how it runs first, they do run hot but the non 'X' R9 290 pumps out less heat than its bigger brother so thermals should be a lesser problem.
The Arctic is a fine option, and will drop the temperatures/noise significantly just be aware it's a large lump, make sure it'll fit the case!
