depends on the gap between the cooler and the cards parts its cooling ... if theres a .05 gap between the cards chip and the cooler then you will need a pad to fill that gap ... seems there was a thing on this at evga forums

one more thing to conceder is when cold it may show a good tight contact but when the card heats up there may be some warpage or separation and contact may be lost with paste unlike a cpu this may have no positive compression of the cooler and chip [cooler may just snap in place and have no way to tighten down further it insure a gap free contact
