Clean installing Windows 8.1 on SSD, some questions I have...

So I decided to get a 120 GB SSD and only have 8.1, some programs, and only BF4. I have no problem running any of my other games on my USB 3.0 externals and use my old HDD for more storage via junctions. I have some questions on going about how to do this as this is my first time (I'm not migrating, nor can you persuade me at this point. So please, don't tell me to.) The way I plan to do this is:

1) install ssd, unplug all externals and old HD.
2) install 8.1
3) boot to desktop, then plug in HD again
4) Copy BF4 to SSD
5) Format old HDD
6) Start moving my backups to freshly formatted HDD
7) plug everything back and setup

One question I have is step 4. If I boot to desktop, can I drag and drop files from the HD when I reconnect it (acting like an external hard drive)? Or do I have to do something special? BF4 is the only game I care about, but both my externals are already full so my only real choice is to just copy and paste my install from my old HD then nuke it.

And any other steps to take when reformatting the old HD to not make it the main boot drive?

I appreciate any responses. Thank you!

Normally you should be able to.
