SO you are stuck with something DX 10 so I would say get a GTX 285, I still have one and it give great performance for a DX10 and noreaster I would have suggested that card if it was a higher CPU besides and didn't have a chance of possibly not getting the full grunt out of the card!!

and another thing as i said i am on holiday and i need to know that my graphics card is going to work 100% sure i cant buy one then go home and then get nothing on the screen then i can do nothing with the gpu

Your E6300 should be reasonable for what you want to do.
Yes, 4gb will be much better.

pcie 1.0/2.0/3.0 are all forward and backward compatible.
No reason a 7750 should not have worked unless it was defective.
Your 400w psu should have been sufficient unless it is a cheap unit.
What brand/model is your psu?
Very old units did not deliver power to 12v. What does the data plate say about the maximum amps for +12v?

What were your symptoms?

Only the top cards see any impact from slower pcie speeds.
A GTX750 or ti will be a very good upgrade that needs no added power.
