My ancient Gateway PC appears to run, but will neither display in general ( my monitor works) nor display when I boot to safe mode. Any ideas on what I might do, and how I might transfer files without the benefit of a monitor? Thanks

If it turns on but you don't get a display, chances are the motherboard is dead. If you look at the motherboard you will probably find several capacitors with issues.

Just remove the hard drive form the computer, get an external case for it and copy the files.
