My laptop: http://apacelli.com/laptops-asus/asus-x550lb-core-i3-4010u-1700-mhz-15-6-1366x768-4gb-500gb-dvdrw-nvidia-geforce-gt-740m-wi-fi-bluetooth-dos-/

Actually there are exceptions to this, since all mobile cpus (at least most of them) can come with either BGA, or LGA Socket G2. The lga one your able to replace just like a desktop cpu. My Gigabyte Q2532N is one of the few laptops that can have it's i5 2410M replaced.

And BTW... that core i3 is haswell and upgrading to the older sandy bridge is not only pointless, but incompatible.

Not true. Laptop CPUs are in BGA package, and they are soldered to the motherboard. They can be unsoldered with a hot-air desoldering station. Then solder balls are applied to the new CPU and the CPU is soldered on the motherboard using the same hot-air gun.

Your i3 is I believe equal to i5 2410M in performance because it is 2 generations newer.
