Hey guys I need help. I'm not sure if I fried my motherboard or if it's something else. Yesterday I powered it on without installing windows or anything, but just to see if it worked and everything worked great, then today when I went to connect the monitor with the VGA cable to the graphics card, the monitor wouldn't power on (Everything else worked like the mouse, the fans, the keyboard, etc) then out of no where I got a slight smell of something burning so I immediately shut it down. Then I called a friend and he asked me if I connected the graphics card with the cable that came with the power supply and told me to make sure it's connected to the one that says PCI E and I stupidly didn't have it connected to that one. Then I connected it and the computer wouldn't even turn on. Please help, could it just be the graphics card that got ruined? Or the motherboard? Or is it not a huge deal and I should just reconnect everything to make sure it's all perfect? Or what should I do? Any help is appreciated. I have the MSI r9 270 graphics card, the MSI 1333 LGA 1160 motherboard, and the Corsair modular 750W power supply

Hi

Remove the graphics card and move well away from base unit
(Different room)
See if burning smell travels with graphics card or stays with base unit

Most intel motherboards have integrated graphics chips
(Graphics chip or on integrated on Intel CPU )
If yours does and burning smell was on graphics card

Try starting up using integrated graphics connector

If smell stays with base unit remove psu
move psu to next room and see if burning smell was motherboard or psu

You were unlucky

The sound and smell you heard was probably the PSU; and the fact t hat it now doesn't power on at all pretty much confirms it. Since it is a new build I would contact Corsair ASAP and tell them what happened and get the defective PSU replaced. While that is happening, see if you can borrow - or take the one out of the PC you posted this thread with - a good, working PSU and hook it up to your new system. If everything starts up that will confirm that it was a bad PSU: HOWEVER, there is always the possibility that when the PSU blew it took other equipment with it. That means more troubleshooting to find out what is bad. Start with t he PSU.

UPDATE: Usually the fans connected to two locations, mobo and molex power points, doesn't result in catastrophic failure and burned smell, unless a fan burns up. But your friend is right, connect fans to either the mobo or a molex plug but Not both.
