I have a HP Laptop. I don't know the exact model number but it has the following configuration :- Intel Core-i5 4210u 1.7Ghz Processor, Nvidia 820M GPU and 4GB RAM. It came preinstalled with Windows 8.1

Now this is my problem :-

Whenever I power-up the laptop by using the power-button, I get the Windows 8 logo and than instead of the login-screen it gives me a black screen. Its not even a black screen, the display is exactly as it is when the laptop turned off(nothing at all on the screen). But I know that the laptop is running because the power button and caps-lock key is illuminated. Now I discovered that in order to get to the Login Screen, I have to manually close the lid and open it. This however does not work everytime. How can I fix it.

Please someone help me. It is a new laptop and I can't return it because I bought t from a different country.

Seems related to software, drivers. You will probably need some bootable media to load windows in safe mode and delete your display (videocard) drivers as the first thing to try. If that doesn't help, you'll need System restore or even resetting you windows to the freshly installed state. There are many things to try but all require windows 8.1 bootable media.
