I have a G33M05 motherboard and Intel 2 quad core processor 2.4Ghz and Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. Its becoming pretty slow these days and I was thinking of upgrading things.

What would folks recommend I tackle first or should I just start from scratch?

I thought about more RAM?
I currently have 3 sticks of 1GB and 1 spare RAM slot. Should I buy a single extra stick or a pair for best use of dual channel?

Thanks for your help in advance.

What operating system are you running and is it a 64-bit or 32-bit version?

Edit: Also, what is your upgrade budget? Plus, what is your PSU wattage?

I would take a new build. Upgrading old rigs is typically a waste of money, and takes time to get reasonable performance.
Its going to cost more, but it will be your best bet.

Im running Windows Vista 32 bit and my PSU is 650W. Im happy to be told its a waste of time trying to salvage this old slow beast but surely it has some potential?

What specific core 2 quad is it? It might have some potential, but its not nearly as much as a fresh build.

With a 32-bit OS there is no point of upgrading the RAM. Although with a 650W PSU you can upgrade your video card to something like an nVidia 650Ti. If you wish to get a little more out of the old beast. Plus, you can carry over the GPU should you decide to upgrade a year or two down the road.

My CPU is an Intel 2 Quad Core Q6600.

Thanks for all the help so far folks.

If I were to upgrade to a 64bit system would it be worth throwing in some extra RAM? And a GPU as radiovan says?

The extra RAM would only benefit you if you can use it - i.e. recent demanding games, photo editing, etc. - otherwise spending money on DDR2 RAM is a lost cause.

Although it is admirable, trying to squeeze out the last bit of life out of your old system, once you start spending money on a new OS and potentially RAM, you might as well start budgeting for a new system, like Gam3r01 suggested.

1. What do you use your machine for, primarily?
2. What is your upgrade/spending budget?
