I noticed that rendering videos takes a bit longer when I do it from a external 5200rpm hdd on usb 3, and doing it from my internal tb hdd 7200rpm is significantly faster! I tested it on sony vegas pro 13 and windows movie maker. It's normal for it to be slower from and external hdd, right?

Well, yes SATA3 is the "faster" interface but in this case it makes very little difference. The internal drive is faster for you because it's spinning at 7200 RPM while the external is only at 5400 RPM.

For reference...

SATA3 can handle a maximum of 6Gbps
USB3 can handle a maximum of 5Gbps

Remember this is just the maximum it can handle - not the actual speed you will get. That depends entirely on the drive and only SSD's will get anywhere near 5+ Gbps.
