The usb port from my external 500gb hard drive broke, when I opened the case inside is a regular desktop hard drive. I bought some sata cables to retrieve the data but when I hook it up to the computer nothing is displayed on my computer. I do see that the computer is reading it or atleast see's it under the disk management, it says 465 Gb unallocated. How do I fix this problem, I need to retrieve the important data on hard drive. Thanks

no problem, I finish installing easeus

Once installed open the program. You will have two otions. Partition Recovery and Data recovery. lets to partitions recovery for now.

On the window click on the drive that you have the issues with. Then click on next. Then make sure Search Entire disk is selected (It is by deafult) Then click next. I would do a Complete search in this section but it will take a LONG time so lets do fast for now and if it doesn't find it then we can go back and do a complete if you like. . Now at this point click next.

Now when you get to this point it may seem like you're suck. you can't click on anything. What it is doing is actually searching the hard drive at this point. The progress bar at the bottom with time will go from left to right. Once the scan is done and the partitions is listed at the top you can check it and then click Proceed. It should then recover the partitions.

if this doesn't work then we may have to go the data recovery route and in which case you will need another drive to move the data too when it gets recovered.

it says to choose a partition to recover, it shows disk 2 465.76 Gb unallocated 476940 mb, it tells me to click proceed to start recovery but it cant be clicked, nothing shows in the main window that says partition, label, status, type. But under that big window im seeing disk 2 465.76 unallocated 476940 mb. Im clicking on that too but the proceed button does not activate

Do you have any luck to retrieve your important data back from this hard drive? Some online data recovery software could be your choices to take chances.
Here is a related posting that has discussed similar drive data recovery problems:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/298659-32-free-data-recovery-external-hard-disk
You can read this posting and get some clues.
But, if this thread also cannot help you, you may need to consult some experts for help.

Thank you for your reply, I was running the easus partition recovery software for a couple hours without it seeming to progress. But ill continue to look for other software. Im very frustrated and lost though.

Try running the Data Recovery part of it.

Also download the Crystal disk info in my signature and then run it. See what the Health Status of the hard drive is. The hard drive could just physically be bad which in that may need to use some other software.

I been running partition wizard recovery because easeus wasn't giving be a progress bar, I been running partition recovery from 8 am this morning to 5 pm and it still has maybe a couple hours left to finish, is this normal for it to take this long? I really appreciate your help

I also ran the crystal disk info but the hard drive isn't showing up, its only showing my internal hard drive

Hmmm thats odd how its not showing up. How is it connected to the PC?

And yea depending on how bad the hard drive is or how big it is it can take a while especially if its a complete/full scan. I know i accidently deleted a 2TB partition on a drive at work (It only had images of PC's so setting them up would be faster) but i used the EASEUS programs i had you use and it took about 2 hours on a fast scan.

I was using easus as adviced. I had it run for about 4 hours with fast scan with no progression. So im trying the partition wizard recovery. Im connecting the harddrive to my laptop via usb 2.0. I had to buy a sata hard drive case to install the external hard drive into it, now running to my laptop through usb.

Its been 33+ hrs and the partition recovery wizard is still running. As this point should I stop the software and go forward with a data recovery software?
