Hello all and welcome to my wonderful networking struggle!

First, let's get to know the main reason I'm trying to use my 7550 as simply a gateway to the Internet. I'm a somewhat avid gamer, and also college student studying Cisco Networking (only in year 2, which is why I'm asking for help). I like to host my own little 8-person-max servers for friends and I to play around on various games. Before I moved to college and had to get my own ISP, I would easily port forward to get a server up and running properly. Now, the only ISP that services my area is Frontier. They absolutely suck. Their equipment sucks, they techs suck, and their service sucks. Using the Netgear 7550 they gave me, I can set up port forward rules, but then never EVER work, and quite frankly, it frustrates the living hell out of me. If I weren't on a somewhat tight budget, I would just lease a dedicated server (so FYI, that is not an option).

Alright. Time to help me find a solution. I use the dd-wrt custom firmware for my Linksys WRT56G v8.0 home router. I love it. I feel in control. There is no dd-wrt version that supports this crappy Netgear 7550, so sadly, I can't go that route. Because I can't flash the 7550, it seems my only solution (that doesn't involve replacing either device), is to set up my 7550 as just a gateway, and have all the routing/forwarding/everything else and all-in-one home router does be handled by my Linksys device.

I've read several places that this means setting up the 7550 into bridge mode, plugging an RJ-45 Ethernet cable between the uplink (on 7550) and Internet (on Linksys) ports, then disabling DHCP on the 7550. I've tried this several times, each working about as well as the last. Not at all. The firmware for my 7550 is VER:06.05.02, and the dd-wrt version on the Linksys device is DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) micro.

Now, I turn to you, citizens of Toms Hardware! You have always found an answer (or at least an explanation as to why something won't work) for all my technological problems in the past, so I have high hopes for you!

(If by chance no solution is found, please let me know if this product would be a good recommendation (I chose Staples as the retailer because I'll get an employee discount): http://www.staples.com/Linksys-X2000-Wireless-N-ADSL2-Modem-Router/product_425007)

The information I posted in this thread are no longer relevant. My configuration has changed too much to be able to diagnose my problem with this setup. This thread is able to be closed.

Sorry for the insanely delayed response. Haven't logged into toms in months. I ended up totally redesigning my network. Got a Netgear ADSL 2+ modem from my store (Staples), and acquired a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk. Much happier now that I got this figured out. Best of luck if you haven't figured anything out yet!
