I'm aware the MSI 970A-G46 is terrible for overclocking because of poor VRM, can I overclock my FX-6300 if I force the voltage to not go over stock? I was thinking I could get an extra .4-.5 GHz at stock voltage, but would that be dangerous anyways to the board?

I've OC'd (via multiplier) on some crappier boards than that with no ill effects. Just leave the vcore at stock and step up the multiplier. You should be able to get a decent OC on that alone. Just be sure to use an aftermarket cooler and watch temps. I recommend the new version of AMD Overdrive and monitor Thermal Margins rather than direct temps.

I got it to 3.8 Ghz easily but then got too scared to try anything further since I'm not very knowledgeable about overclocking. Haven't had an issue at 3.8 though.

Right on, i got mine to 4050mhz at 1.4v. Thought things were a bit unstable so i reverted back to defaulf. Now when it boosts to 4.1 the voltage goes up to 1.48. This seems too high so im ganna set it to the same as yours cause i know i can maintane lower volts. Im ganna get a different mobo soon though.

Keep going. When the temps get too high or the system isn't stable, back off.
