I am a school teacher (English if that tells you about my technology skills), and I recently noticed my Maxtor 3200 wasn't spinning up. I bought a new adapter and I smelled a faint burning odor.

Frustrated, I carefully opened up the external drive and found a small drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10).

I detached it from the power supply and motherboard. I have it set aside. Can I connect it to my Macbook and recover the data from it?

Thank you,
Robby

The longer one is power and the shorter one is the data. You can get a USB to sata adaptor and plug it into a usb port. If your comp has an external esata port, that would be the best. Also, if you have a desktop comp, the hdd will fit into a vacant slot and plug right into the power supply for power and with a sata cable plug into an internal sata port just like any other HDD. Then boot up and it should show up and be usable if it is functional.

Yeah, why not have a try? Just connect this drive to your computer with a new enclosure and see whether it could be read normally on your computer.
If it works well there, just copy out your data timely. But, if the data copying process could be easily done, use some drive recovery software to take chances.
But, if this drive also cannot be work functionally there, send it to some drive agencies and see whether they can find ways to fix your drive and rescue data.
