I think something is wrong with my GPU

system specs:
mobo: Asus P8B75-M
CPU: i7 2600K
GPU: Gigabyte HD 7970
RAM: Corsair 8gb DDR3
power supply: ATX 800w

a few days ago, i had to do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7. once it was done and my computer started booting up, lines appeared all over the Asus splash screen. i don't know how else to describe them, it was just a bunch of vertical, squiggly lines everywhere. they stayed on even when i got to my desktop, so i restarted my computer and they went away. sometime later that day, they did it again and haven't done it since.

another time when i loaded up my computer, it didn't recognize that i had a GPU plugged in. my desktop wasn't in 1080p CCC didn't recognize my 7970. i eventually took out my GPU and reseated it, made sure everything was plugged in snug, etc.

today, i was playing Smite (a MOBA video game if you haven't heard of it), and my fps took a crap on me. i've never tested my fps on that game, but it feels like an easy 60+, maybe a lot higher. it always runs perfectly smooth on the highest settings (it's not very demanding), and my internet is good so i never have lag. but halfway through a match, my fps gradually started dropping. towards the end, it was probably around 15-20 fps and felt like a slideshow. i stopped playing and wondered (and hoped) that it was just the servers lagging. i loaded up Borderlands 2 and killed some stuff for a few minutes, and the game ran smooth during that time.

i was hoping that it was just a random hiccup, but whenever i play Smite again, about halfway through the match my fps will start chugging and getting worse. if i try to play more than one match, the second match has terrible fps. if i just play one match and quit, it's manageable enough for that match. but if i try to play more in one sitting, it sucks. if i take a break after a match, quit the game and come back later, the process repeats. fine at the start and gradually gets worse.

again, i used to run this game flawlessly and my internet is fine. so this is definitely out of the ordinary. i've checked my temps and fan speeds while the game is running, and they're both normal. but when you couple that with the other things i've mentioned (lines on the screen, my GPU not being recognized one time), it really makes my think my GPU is dying on me.

so, do you think it's a GPU problem? if so, is there any maintenance i could do on it (such as cleaning it, reapplying thermal paste, w/e) to keep it running? or is it time to get a new one?

Solution
I guess you could open it up and try and apply some more thermal paste, but it doesn't really sound like an overheating issue and it would void your warranty. So just RMA it I say, you'll be happy you did in the end.
pls pick my response as the solution if you're happy with my response. A lot of people don't bother :(

i bought it on newegg a year ago, and it says there's a 3 year manufacturer's warranty. so i'm guessing i could RMA it. the only problem is that i have no backup GPU, so i'd be stuck with no PC for weeks, or at best whatever onboard graphics i might have.
