It is showing up in device manager as both a disk drive and DVD drive.

When I click on the WD Passport in disk drive in device manager, it says it is working properly.

When I click on the WD Passport in DVD drive in device manager, it says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
The driver could not be loaded because a previous version of the driver is still in memory.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get this WD Passport Essentials working? I should add that I am able to access this drive on my Win Vista computer.

Thank you in advance.

My best guess is to uninstall the device in Device Manager and then reboot with the device attached. Tell us what happens.

And just in case, unlikely as it is, that this damages the files on the passport, do you have copies of them somewhere?
