Looking to buy a new system. A 4690k with gtx 780 puts it out of my price range. Better to get the Faster CPU with the gtx 770 or is 4460 with a gtx 780 3gb a better upgrade?

I would get the 4460 and the GTX 780, it's still 3.4ghz, which should be more than sufficient for any game out there.

If you're only gaming on 1920 x 1080, the GTX 770 is good enough. It will games. So I recommend getting the i5-4690k so that you can try overclocking in future.

The difference between the 4460 and 4690k is only 50 bucks, why not wait and save up the extra 50 bucks to have the best experience over a trade off.

To answer the original question, in crappy console ports that just slap huge textures on to a PC version like BF4 then the 780 and the 4460 will be better overall, but in actual PC games (MMO's especially) that have tons of players then CPU performance really matters which is where the 4690k really shines when overclocked, so it really depends on what games you want the better performance in.

Looking to buy my new PC from Freshtech solutions. Seems very well priced for the systems compared to elsewhere ive looked. Budget of £800. Dont want to build myself as had bad luck with parts before. The PC will be used mostly for MMO and other PC games.

Its around £130 more to get the 4690k with a gtx 780. Even more expensive through the system builder.

Upgrading from a E8400 3.0ghz dual core + gtx 460 v2

I was shocked when I read that last line. I'm sure you'll get shocked by the performance difference between your old PC and your planned one.

Go for the cheapest CPU in this case 4460 and get the gtx 780 which is enough for gaming, most recent games use 4 cores processors. The games are more dependent of the graphic card.

I agree with IronBatman, in either case I think you will be happy with the performance.

Personally I would go with the 4690k because overclocked it should perform better in CPU intensive scenarios which is especially helpful in areas of games where there are lots of people around (Things like world events in Rift for instance, or conquest PVP, or similar scenarios in other games) while in most MMO's where there aren't anyone around your frame rate will probably be capped by your monitor refresh anyway in either case. Plus, even if you don't want to overclock it opens up the option to do so later and is a nicer motherboard.

However, in lots of newer single player games the GPU is really the deciding factor. For instance in Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs, or BF4 (single player or benchmarking). This is where the 780 would be more useful.

Again, I think the two machines trade off depending on the scenario and you'll likely be happy with either one considering the huge disparity from what you are moving from, if you do happen to go with the 4690k see if you can get a cheap aftermarket cooler like the 212evo or something similar.
