Hi all,

What would be the advantage if any of using a Z97 chipset board for a locked processor like the i5 4590? I recently watched a video by a builder saying that there were possible future proofing advantages of using the board even if your processor was locked. Any info is welcome!!

You can still slightly overclock a locked CPU but not my much. (I think because the bclk is still unlocked by default) Certainly not enough to go past 4GHz by any stretch of the imagination. The only thing I can see coming out of getting a Z97 board is for getting a themed build with one of the slick looking ones. An aftermarket cooler would be a better option. Not one to overclock with but one that is quieter than the stock cooler.

BCLK overclocking, but that's not going to get you very far and overclocks other parts of the system that really don't respond well to overclocking
