Will this motherboard Gigabyte Z97X-GAMING 5 Gaming Motherboard Core, work on this processor : Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz 2.67 GHz

No. Different socket.
With Z97 you need a Haswell cpu which is socket 1150.

Q9400 is LGA775 and finding motherboard for this cpu is pretty hard now.

No, u will need lga 775 socket mobo which are quite cheap and have very low scope for future upgrade. Go with an intel i5 4670k if you want to save $$$ and want good performance, i7 4770k if u are hard gamer and have no problem with money........................................
Now most of the games at least require an quad core intel and i5 is best.........
