I'm at my wits end....

I'm suffering from complete system freezes (screen freezes, no mouse or keyboard input - needs a hard reboot) on my newly build custom machine. I thought I was dealing with a faulty GTX 780, but I swapped it for another and I get the exact same freezes.

When the the GTX 780 is plugged into my motherboard's PCIe 2.0 x16 slot the freezing occurs once every few hours. When the card is plugged into the PCIe 2.0 x4 slot the freezing occurs every few days.

Please help - this computer is for designing/rendering and I'm getting tired of saving work every few minutes =(

Is the culprit the motherboard? Or can something else still be causing this madness (like ram?)

System Specs:
CPU: FX-8350
Motherboard: Asus M5a97
Ram: 8GB
GPU: asus gtx 780 directcu ii
Power Supply: Corsair CX750
Cooling(cpu): Corsair H100i
Windows 8.1

Solution
I had 2GB RAM (seems good for W7) and that computer froze up more than HECK!! The motherboard finally went out less than a year in and took the RAM with it. It could have also taken the Pentium 4 CPU too. I replaced the motherboard with a Asus H81M-C/CSM motherboard and the CPU with another Pentium 4@3GhZ. The RAM was upgraded to some Samsung 4GB RAM.
