Hi ,

I am creating the following build :

i7-4790
Asus H97-Plus LGA 1150
Kingston Hyperx Fury 16gb(2x8)
Samsung 840 EVO 250gb
Seagate 4tb Internal HDD
Seasonic X-series 750W
NZXT h440

This build will be used for Music production. No overclocking. Do you think its necessary to include a CPU cooler for this build?
Also any alternatives to the NZXT h440 in terms of price/size/features such as the Phantom 410 (mid tower only) ?
I am looking to minimize the budget while keeping it future proofed. So any other suggestions are also welcome.

Nah, you don't need an aftermarket cooler. The stock one will work just fine.

If you are not using a GPU, get a 450w PSU. 750w is ridiculous for this computer with no GPU.

For the case, get something smaller because you have no GPU. Like a Corsair 300r.

For the cooler, the stock one is fine but if you insist on an aftermarket one, I recommend something cheap just to keep the CPU a bit cooler than stock. A Coolermaster Hyper tx3 would do the trick.

Thank you . I shall look into the Corsair 300r. I do wish to leave room for expansion though. Have not included a Video Card for now but might put one in the future say 8 months to a year from now ( Nvidia 800 series :)  ) . As for the cooler I guess I'll stick to not putting one in for now. Glad to know its not needed for this build

To clarify, the CPU comes with a cooler, that you MUST use.

Yes I understand :)  . Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

For music production - take a look at the Fractal Design Define R4 series.

The price is similar to the h440 (cheaper on newegg.ca actually), has a bunch of sound aborbant materials lining the case (so you can hear the music, not the case fans), and loads of expansion room if you decide to add a higher end GPU or soundcard down the road.

CPU cooler - as others have said. Stock one is more than adequate for your needs, a cheaper aftermarket one (a la coolermaster hyper 212+ or whatever they have renamed it again) will run the CPU a little cooler and quieter. Your call.

My inital plan was to go for a Noctua NH-D14 since I figured if I put that in I would never have to upgrade it ever again no matter how much I tax my system. The cooler master hyper 212 evo is about half the price and very good from what I have heard but I am a bit wary of putting in a water based cooler. Since the 4790 comes with a stock cooler and the H440 has 3 fans in it I figured it was good enough and wanted to save some money. Not 100% sure though.

I am from India so I will have to check up the availability of the Fractal Design R4. From the reviews I have read ,it seems like a very good case. The Phantom 410 is available here and is slightly cheaper. Cooler master products are also available. So if you have any other suggestions regarding those please do let me know.

With your proposed usage - the stock fan will be enough and wouldn't need upgrading ever either (unless the fan fails - but that can happen to a NH-D14 too).
The CM hyper 212 evo is not a water based cooler, it is essentially a smaller and cheaper design similar to the Noctuna (heat pipes and radiator mounted away from the actual CPU surface).

I have the Hyper 212+ in my i5-2500K at 4.4GHz for 3 years and no issues... while I did blow out the radiator fins recently as they were building up some crud - the same would have happened with any other heatsink after couple years constant usage.

Yeah sorry. I remember checking the Hyper 212 Evo again and seeing that it was not a water based cooler. Do you have any experience with music production by any chance? Is the Noctua an overkill for this configuration?

Overall I'd say as long as your case is more modern and has decent airflow, the stock cooler should be efficient if not overclocking. Stock coolers are ment for running stock speeds, so I wouldn't worry about the CPU overheating. I have heard the i7's do run a little hotter due to the Hyper-threading, but I still think with good case flow its perfectly fine.

No music production experience (unless you count single 1/8" input to make a wav/mp3 file about 15 years ago lol)

IMHO - a Noctuna D-14 is overkill in any configuration that doesn't have overclocking and overvolting of the CPU. If you are going to pull over 100W of heat from a CPU (with an OC+OV) to make something like a D-14 necessary - I'd be looking more towards a higher end AIO or custom watercooling setup as they can scale for much higher heat dissapation than a D-14.

I would not buy any AIO as the D14 will be basically the same. You have to build a custom loop to get significantly better performance than an air cooler.

Thanks.. Yeah I am aware that the Noctua d14 performs better than most (atleast from what I have researched) . Only a custom watercooling setup will outdo it.
