We have a business (church) account with AT&T U-verse using a 2Wire Gateway (model 3801HGV). Internet is the only service we use from AT&T. We want to change our DNS servers to use OpenDNS. I spoke with AT&T this morning and they want to charge us $85 to tell us how to make this change in the router (there does not seem to be an edit feature in this section of the router). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think ATT does everything they can to make running uverse painful. It is very hard to even get the manuals for the 2wire boxes and then there are different software revisions so the screens are different. Last time I was messing with one of these I don't think you can set the DNS anywhere but there are so many subscreens on that thing its hard to say.

So the first option is to change the DNS in the DHCP server part of the router. This is where you would set the ip blocks you want to use on your lan. In most routers you can specify 2 DNS servers to give to your PC. If that is not a options then the next place is to try to change the DNS on the wan/broadband ports. This would be the same place you would set a static wan ip...

Wow, I didn't know that ATT Uverse was so very very bad. If it were me I would be looking for a different provider by now. Other than that, Do the research. I am sure you will eventually figure out how to set it up.

I suspect you can do neither...rumor has it there is a admin mode ATT can get into to set this type of stuff that the end user does not have access to. This is mostly because they bundle their tv over these devices and it has dependencies.

If all else fail I know you can disable the DHCP server. This would allow you to use another router or small pc to act as a dhcp server. Any old router will work you would just have to rig it to send the default network to the uverse gateway rather than itself.

You can of course ask people to manually set the open dns server in their end devices. Of course this almost tells the people who want to get around your restrictions how trivial it is to get around opendns security. Until very recently the recommended google search word when you keyed in opendns was "bypass". Pretty much opendns only protects those that want to use it to avoid accidental access to content it does not even slow down those that are intentionally trying to get restricted sites.
