Want to decide between the two. Is going to be used for casual non-linear editing of family 1080p DSLR recorded videos. Is the workflow going to be smooth with i5? Not concerned with video filter, effects etc. and how much time is it going to take for final rendering.

For 1080p videos, i7 will have more advantage. The more resolution, the more processing power needed on each render.
It also depends on the codec. Uncompressed RGB is really slow, while UT 420 is really fast.

You can consider the FX 8350 too. It behaves like a 3770k in video rendering for half the price.

The time it takes for final rendering is not an issue. I am most concerned with how smooth video building is going to be (organizing, trimming and viewing clips in the timeline)? And I want a processor that fits into 1150 socket motherboard that I have already.

^This or the 4790. Looking back would be a waste of time.

The overall experience will be very similar but still the i7 will still take the advantage.
