Hi,

I have an R9 270, and a 40 inch 1080p Samsung TV. If I use VGA, the power saving will automatically kick if the screen hasn't changed for 15 minutes, but if I use HDMI (or DVI) the screen goes black after 15 minutes but doesn't turn itself off. The TV is old, I got it in 2008 and nothing in the settings has made any difference.

On the flip side, modern games look far worse in VGA compared to HDMI, so I dont want to use VGA for gaming. I don't mind VGA for day to day stuff like web browsing or watching videos, so I was hoping I could switch between both on the same TV. Right Now, I can use either no problem, but with both plugged in only HDMI works, switching the channel to VGA only shows my desktop wallpaper. Is there any way I can use both at the same time on the same display so I can switch back and forth ?,

Thanks in advance.

You don't want to use both connections in one monitor, basically what is happening is that the video card thinks there are two monitors attached. So when you switch to the other inputon the TV you only see the extended monitor.

You can set the TV to turn off after 15 minutes in it's onscreen power saving option. There really should not be much difference with VGA vs HDMI displays, HDMI would be a bit sharper but also jaggier if you look up close.

I managed to get the result I wanted, I right clicked on my desktop, selected resolution and on "multiple displays" I selected "duplicate these displays". Works fine so far, when you say you don't want to use both connections in one monitor, will It cause any harm ?.

Already tried it, it doesnt work. If the source is set to VGA, it will power off the TV after 15 minutes being Idle, but if its set to HDMI then all I get is a black screen but the display is still on.

Agreed, but I was getting a weird ghosting affect on games that gave my system any kind of a workout on VGA, on HDMI thats gone, and the picture looks slightly better too.

If you have ghosting with a VGA cable, you may be using a cable that is too long, badly made or you have it next to a lot of interference.
