I am building this for my neighbor. He already has a nice Samsung monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, and decent speakers. He needs to upgrade because his computer is from about 2004 and he is unable to do some of the things he needs to in Windows XP. There are a ton of compatibility issues with this OS these days. His only requirements are the ability to play some flight sims (not super resource hungry games), light photo work, and browsing the internet. He requested a quad core, USB 3.0, an HDMI out, and 1 TB of HDD space. I have an unused key for Windows 8 that I am going to give him. He also has a fairly new optical drive in his current PC that will be reusing.

Before you tell me he needs a dedicated GPU, look up the Kaveri APU and gaming on Youtube. It will more than handle the stuff he wants to do. I think the only game he even wants to play is War Thunder. It doesn't need much. The reason I chose 2400mhz DDR3 is to better utilize the APU's R7 graphics. He doesn't care about running the latest and greatest at max specs.

That all said, I just need someone with some experience to look this over and make sure I am not under or over spending in any particular area. Tips or suggestions are appreciated.

EDIT: A thought: Is there RAM that is cheaper and easily overclocks to 2400mhz? I know that's probably not likely but I thought I'd ask. AMD sells "gaming RAM" under their brand that is supposed to be for using their APUs. Is that RAM any more worth it or better for some reason in this application?

For $450, I'd say it's not going to get much better than that. I could suggest a few changes, but nothing would really be better, just different... a lot of people around here would do well to understand that. :heink:

The only thing I'd say you should change, though, is the PSU - Corsair has been having some troubles with their CX-series power supplies, more specifically the quality of capacitors used in them... I'd have to recommend going with a similarly priced Antec or Seasonic unit if you can find one. Other than that, you've got more than enough power to browse the web and do light gaming. I prefer Asus motherboards to Gigabyte due to some bad experiences in the past, but that's just personal opinion. Fractal makes some...

Thank you for your input. I think it's best to let some others look over a build before you buy. I would hate to order this stuff and only then realize some glaring flaw in the build. I will look into the brands you mentioned.

EDIT: I changed the build as you suggested to the Antec VP-450. Little less power, but still well within what I need and for a little less money too.

I'm running the G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 2400MHz on my Gigabyte A88X ITX with no issues. I raised the volts to 1.65v and selected the XMP1 profile and she's been kicking ever since -- boosted my memory bandwidth by 20% over default.

The price on the RAMs has 'creeped-up' $15-$20 over the last 3 months. Basstuds.

There are some interesting looking Combos at the Egg that might save you $20-$30 (like this one - not sure the RAMs are on the QVL list). That will get you under $500 total with a 120GB SSD ...
