A few things to try... make sure your router and computer are on the same subnet under LAN settings (usually starts with a 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx... make sure the first 3 sets of digits are the same). And that the DHCP server on the router is turned on. Also you may want to ensure that the WAN is set to DHCP as well (since it seems to work, as you say, when you connect your broadband directly to your PC).

If you have a cable modem be sure to turn it off every time you switch between your PC and your router. It will only allow you to have 1 mac address active at a time and it keeps the first one it sees after it is powered on. The only way to clear most modems is to turn the power off.

As long as the DHCP server on your router is enabled, and your computer is properly getting an address it should automatically be on the same subnet. This wouldn't be true if you've assigned yourself your own IP address on your computer. So if you have it set to automatically obtain an address (DHCP) then you wouldn't have to worry about this part.

I've known some friends who have fallen off their home LAN and couldn't get back on and it turned out they were playing around with static IP settings on their computers. But if you have not done this, it may be a different issue.

By default routers' DHCP is set to be turned on. So, double check that it is. If it is on, then it's a different issue. You may want to talk to your ISP to see if your cable modem as a MAC address restriction like bill001g suggested.
