Today, I sat down with Fraps and tried to record gameplay. When I was done recording, I compressed the video file with VirtualDub using the XVid Codec. This is when the problem starts. When I open up Premiere Elements 10 and try to import the file it won't work.

The error is: "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed".

Is there a different codec I should install or should I try another professional video editing software like Vegas Pro? I know Windows Movie Maker can read it, so I'm not sure why a payware like Premiere Elements wouldn't read it.

Have you tried re-encoding with something like Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip? Both of those are free downloads. Download from handbrake.fr and squared5.com. XVid is not an ideal format for editing.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I tried re-encoding with Handbrake and it works great!
