Let me start by saying everything is all hooked properly from the computer to router to modem to cable. I am currently on my router's configuration page and am trying to set up Internet.

When I am using Netgear Genie and using the setup wizard, I select my country, hit "next", and then it shows a loading screen that says "Detecting Internet connection", and then 30 seconds later, it says in red text at the top, "problem detecting the internet connection- IP Address".

Why does this happen?

And then it asks if my ISP assigned me a static IP. I say no, hit "next". Then this where I am confused. It says "if you previously connected to your Internet Service with a computer or another router, NETGEAR can use the same MAC address that worked before".

What does that mean? I DO have another network in my house, could that be the cause of the problems? Thx for the help! Any is appreciated.

ok... did you power down the modem (cable, DSL, other?) for a couple of minutes BEFORE connecting it to the Router? If not, do that then restart the wizard.

Normally, I bypass the wizards and go right into the configuration.

No, I did not. Why is that necessary? (Just total curiosity)

ok... check it this way.. plug the modem directly into the computer... can you get online? as in goto Google.com and search for speedtest do you get a list of websites?

If yes, then your modem is set to DHCP. Unplug it again and plug yourself into the router and go to the main configuration page and then to the WAN / Internet page. Make sure it set to DHCP. Now plug the Modem into the WAN/Internet port and plug it back in... Once it powers up, go to the status page of the router. Dows it show trhe WAN / Internet connected or ?

Wait you can connect online with no router?! Then what holds an IP Address?

Okay, when I go to google.com I get a web page from my IPS saying "welcome to Time Warner Cable Internet!"

Then there is a change authorization needed with the ISP... Tomorrow (or now) call the support line and get them to re authorize the modem.

I am not sure if my ISP allows multiple modems in one home. That would be extremely sucky if they did not, I would throw my clock out the window. Why do they have to be so non-flexible...
