Hey Tom's!

Hoping I could get some insight on this.

The small retail store I work at is going to upgrade one of their PC's. I'm thinking of getting a warrantied PC from either Dell or HP. Here are the specs of the two computers.

#1. Front PC:

- CPU: Pentium E5300

- MB: OG679R

- RAM: 4gb DDR2

- GPU: on board through Mobo

#2. Back PC:

- CPU: i3 540

- MB: P7H55-M LX

- RAM: 4gb DDR3

- GPU: on board through Mobo

They use the front computer only for sales manager of keystroke which is a standard P.O.S software (Bar code scanning/ monetary transactions). They use the back computer for keystroke, price tagging, emails, minor Photoshop and marketing through social media. PC #1 with the pentium is rather... archaic, and I am thinking of swapping the two PC's, and making the PC with the pentium as a backup and storing it away. The PC with the i3 would be the front PC, and I am currently ordering a rig for the back room.

Could you guys suggest a rig that would work well for a small retail store? Would an i5 benefit this company a lot? I am also considering getting SSD's for the i3 system and the new system.

Sorry for the ramble, might seem confusing. Any replies are appreciated! Tom's FTW

Most of the POS terminals I've used will not benefit much from higher end hardware such as an i5. The i3 will be just fine, and an SSD really won't be a huge improvement unless you are constantly reading and writing data. For the machine with Photoshop, you will see a small improvement with an i5, but it is still somewhat unnecessary unless you are using it often.

Thank you for telling me the applications the company use are not as intensive as a thought they were and not waste money on unnecessary equipment. However, the owner of the company wants the back PC to be "faster" and was thinking a 128gb SSD would help with that. What do you guys think?

Thank you Blaise170 and hans_pcguy! I'll get a 128gb evo for the back PC and leave it at that and tell her after "further research" (you guys :D) there is no need to upgrade. You guys are awesome, thank you so much.
