For years I have experienced signal either dropping completely or dropping down to <1mbps down, yet my upload speed stays stable. I currently use a Motorola Sufboard SB6141 modem and an Apple Airport Extreme 5 router. My ISP is Time Warner, and I pay for 15mbps down and 2mbps up. Is there any way that I could fix this myself or do I need to call a technician?

EDIT: I should also mention, resetting my modem (unplugging for ten seconds) fixes the problem temporarily.

You should be able to get into the router and look at the levels for the channels. I forget the exact numbers that are considered good but there are charts easily found with google. What tends to be the issue most times is water or something else in the cable splitter connections. You can take apart and clean them. Any that are exposed to any moister you should use the connectors that have rubber gaskets in them or seal them with something like heat shrink tubing. You want the modem to be connected to the very first splitter in the house and that splitter must be rated for data. If you remove the splitter and use a barrel connector hook the wire coming into the house directly to the line going to the cable modem you might see the signal level increase. If they increase a lot then the splitter or something on your tv side of the cable is causing interference.

Are you getting 1MB down or 1mb downloads, becuase they say they offer 15mb down and 1/10 of that would be 1MB.

I call about every day with my ISP for 2 years now and seem like calling is a wast of time but I keep calling because were paying for the service. My connections slow down to .1Mbs and sometimes disconnects form mins to hours.

I'm with Suddenlink cable at 3Mbs in southern OK.
