Why is my desktop so slow?

Hi all,

Recently, my home desktop PC became so slow, so I did some upgrades myself. The problem is that it's still slow, and I can't figure it out why. Not that it drives me crazy, but I think it should be way faster than it is now.

Could anybody give me advice as to 1) why it's still slow, and 2) how I can take care of this?

Here is the specs of the main parts:

CPU : AMD Athlon x2 4400+
Memory : Samsung DDR2 PC2-6400U 2G x 3 (total 6G)
Storage: SSD 840 Evo Samsung (for system) + 500GB HDD (for data)
Mainboard: GA-M56S-S3
VGA: GeForce 8500 GT NVIDIA

What I do with my home desktop PC is really basic stuff. Just web surfing, and document editing, etc. No gaming at all.

To my knowledge, CPU shouldn't matter much based on my normal usage of the system. Memory is more than enough even though it's not DDR3. Most of all, SSD should give me the biggest bump, but I don't realize its speed. I can see its speed only when I boot my PC.

Any advice?
Thanks!

If you have fresh installed the OS (since you added SSD im guessing you did) the only thing I can think of is a hardware failure...... could be your ram? try pulling all sticks out but one and see if that helps, if its the same put the second stick in (1st in 1st slot, 2nd in 3rd slot) see if that helps

Hey, thanks for your answer.

I fresh installed the OS, and I double-checked the RAM. In the OS I'm running, I can see that it recognizes 6gb of RAM, and my new SSD.

Could it be IDE/ AHCI issues, or SATA 2 issues? I'm pretty sure that even if I use SATA 2 ports, it should give me noticeable peed bumps. I'm not sure about the IDE/AHCI issues though. Some say that I didn't set it up right when I installed the OS in the first place...

What mode did you set your sata controller to? IDE or AHCI? AFAIK you need to use AHCI for ssd's or they don't work properly.

other than this im stumped, this is very curious issue

Actually, I'm far away from home, so I can't check if I put it in AHCI mode or not. I made sure that I put it in the right mode, but I should double-check. Thanks, though. I will get back to this thread with updates, if there is any.
