This problem used to be occasional and is now happening almost every time I boot into XP Pro (64 bit). After the "loading your personal settings" message, there is a longer than usual delay, then when the desktop finally appears it is minus most of my personal settings (no wallpaper, but I still have about half of my icons). Then I get the "take a tour of Windows XP" bubble. I don't get any messages about it loading a temporary profile or anything like that, and the profile doesn't seem to be corrupt because when I reboot, there is another longer than usual delay loading the desktop but then my correct settings always load. Thanks for any thought on what could be causing this.

Do a drive check using a utility from the maker of the hard drive or the computer. Don't just run a checkdsk from Windows although that will probably find errors if you do run it, but it won't really give you a dignostic on the hard drive.

Also make sure you have backups of your files as you are likely to need to replace the hard drive, or at least re-install Windows.

Many thanks. The full disk check didn't turn up any problems, but chkdsk did and so far I haven't had the problem again. Thanks also for the steer in the right direction - for some reason I thought of it as a purely Windows glitch.
