At 768p, you don't need too much firepower depending on what games you want to play. What are you looking to do, and, does efficiency matter? (as in, wattage)

At that resolution it's better for us to know your CPU. Your graphics card will not be stressed much, and probably a mid range one will suffice.

Generally, all cards can handle single monitor setups. Basically, when you want to run multiple monitors, you might start looking at the cards with bigger memory. But there isn't really something specific to worry about with single monitor performance.

Ok. Yeah it definitely won't bottleneck lol. But, for that resolution, a GTX 770 is way overkill. The advantage is that you probably won't have to upgrade that card for at least a few years. You can buy a better monitor and still use it fine with max game settings.

Do you have a preference between nVidia and AMD?

yes i had to choose between gtx 660 and r9 270x as they are the same cost and i am on a little bit of a budget but i may take the gtx 760 if it gets cheaper, but what is better gtx 760 or 270x? from a previous thread i found out that 270x kicks 660 but does it kick the 760?
by this chart it doesn't http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-car...

In general the GTX 760 is better than the 270x. You can get on average maybe 15 fps more with the GTX 760 at 1080p. There's the R9 280 as well, which is slightly faster than the GTX 760 but slightly cheaper.

by reviews the 280 is faster but uses more power (he really is faster?) but does the high power consumage mean that he will run hotter

At idle, both the cards consume similar power. At load, the R9 280 is indeed a bit more power hungry. Whether it will run hotter depends on the cooler that the manufacturer has put on it, compared to the cooler of the GTX 760. If you look at the review of bit-tech linked below, you'll see that the temperature difference of the XFX Radeon R9 280 DD Edition is lower than the GTX 760. But, it's also lower than the stock AMD Radeon R9 270X 2GB which uses less power than the 280.
