Hi All,

I have owned this newish rig for over 6 months now with no issues. In the last 2 days by mouse and keyboard have been locking up. I will be browsing the net or playing BF3 and I would hear the notification sound of a USB device being inserted or removed, then my mouse would freeze for 2 seconds. Sometimes the keyboard will randomly lock up and the only solution is to reset.

The mouse freeze is more frequent that the keyboard lock-up.

I have updated drivers, un-installed and reinstalled drivers, run windows update, cleaned the optics of the mouse and disabled the setting under device manager/mouse/ power management to 'allow this device to wake up the computer'. I have changed USB ports around too.

Important note:
The last thing I remember doing before this issue started was updating the firmware of my sumsung printer which is connected directly via USB to my PC. Not sure if this is the culprit....

Specs
Windows 8.1 Pro, 64 bit
16MB Ram
i5-4670K @3.4GHz
Nvidia GTX 780 Ti
Mouse: Razor Deathadder 3.5
Keyboard: Logitech G110

Any suggestions or help is appreciated and my thanks in advance

Yeah definitely sounds like a driver issue then. Did you install the latest firmware for the mouse and keyboard as well?

Good luck with the support hopefully you'll get a response from them quickly!

Hi Karsten
I have gone on to EZ update and checked for updates but there is nothing there. (not sure if this updates USB too)
I also went to ASUS support but not sure which section to look under for USB drivers, do you know? Is it under utilities?

Hi Mahisse,
I not sure about the mouse solution because both mouse and keyboard are jamming.
I have disconnected the printer totally I still have the issue.
I dont use any anti-virus software - only the anti-malware program that comes with Windows

Agghh, sorry I picked you message as the solution by accident. Dont know how to un-select it as solved.

Anyway I tried another mouse and havent had any issues since but the Keyboard still jams up.
How could a mouse and keyboard both fail at the same time if it is a hardware issue?

Okay fine but maybe you could shoud the value for you mouse control in the Registry and tell us what it says anyway..

You should really get a free antivirus program as a minimum like AVG Free for example. To rule out any 3. party interference you should really do a complete scan of the PC for vira/malware.

What about a BIOS update? Do you have the latest version?

How much of a pain would it be to reinstall Windows?

Edit: De-selected best solution ;)

So when I plugged in my old mouse - I plugged it into the Front Case USB slots. The current mouse that was jamming was plugged into the rear case USB slots. Not sure if that has made the difference. (I cant plug it in the back ports because it wont reach my desk!) I am going to un-wire everything and plug the existing mouse into the front panel and see if its not an hardware issue.

How do I get the registry details for you?
I have EZ update which is part of ASUS software - I think it it keeps my BIOS updated - I think.
Installing windows would be a bit of pain to be honest. I use the PC now for work too.

Wait.. Are the mouse and keyboard wireless? If so I'm sure you checked the batteries.

Are you saying that your old mouse is working in the front USB ports? It is possible that you have different power management for the USB in the back and in the USB in the front?

The problem is that I don't have Win 8 myself so I'm not really confident trying to guide you through the registry database but it should be similar as describe in the previous link:

Click the windows orb (start icon in the toolbar bottom left of the screen) and in the search. (Just hold windows button + R in win8)

type Regedit, and then click OK.
Click the plus sign :smileyplus: next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign :smileyplus: next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign :smileyplus: next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign :smileyplus: next to Control.
Click the plus sign :smileyplus: next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
On the left hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar

Modify. (don't modify anything, just tell us the string value)

Code:

Went to the directory, then there are 4 folders under {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, they are called 0001,0002,0003,004, plus a configuration folder and then properties folder. All the variables in 0001 - 0004 are the same except the Matching DeviceID file. I can only click on modify once I am in these 0001-0004 folders.

Tried the existing mouse on the front USB and it still fails. So it must be a hardware issue with this Razer mouse. Keyboard seems ok now. (could a faulty mouse be tripping up the keyboard too?)

Mouse & Keyboard are Not wireless.

Nah probably not... It does sound to be a Windows 8.1 USB power management problem meaning windows but it's weird that this would happen under gaming. Could you please try the following in the link=

I am not sure. I went through that article and wasn't too comfortable in making and editing registry keys for USB ports.

A few further findings in case youre still interested:

  • When rolling back the drivers on the Razer mouse and keyboard to Windows 2006 drivers - there are no issues with the devices, work perfectly.
The Keyboard shares the same driver as the mouse - Both Razer 3.5G Black drivers. Makes me think the driver is the issue.
The Razer mouse will fail on any USB port - front or back when the driver is installed. My old mouse works are all USB ports

I have sent an email to Razer support with the issue. I wont hold my breath!! Thanks for your help nevertheless.
Cheers.

Hi Mahisse,

Razer Tech support has confirmed that my mouse is dead. I am never buying their products again, many people complain about their overpriced crap products and now I can see why. It only lasted me 6 months!!!

Went out and bought a Roccat Kone + gaming mouse today. Never heard of it before and I wanted to stay away from Logitech and Razer products if possible. The reviews were good, plus it wont a couple awards on Toms and it looks & feels great. Should last longer than the Razer.

Many thanks for all your help and suggested nonetheless. Appreciate it.

Hi!

Thank you for coming back with the "solution". Too many people do not bother, forgetting that someone else may be in same situation as they were.

Personally I have never understood the need of a "high-end" gaming mouse since I'm just a casual player and seems to be doing fine with a casual mouse on multiplayer. I defintely believe Razer is overpriced no matter what though:D. I tend to stay away from Logitech as well based on personal experience.

Cheers.
