Hi experts,

I built a PC two years ago with the following components:

Chassis: Zalman Z9 with 5 (120 mm) fans.
PSU/SMPS: OCZ 650W ZS 80+
Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M LX V2
CPU: AMD FX-6100
GPU: MSI GTX-670
RAM: 8GB (2 x 4GB) HyperX DDR3 1333MHz DIMM 240-pin CL9
HDD: Samsung SpinPoint M8 2.5

I have been playing games like Deus Ex (Human Revolution) on maxed settings. I recently installed Thief (2014 release) which is more intensive on the GPU.

I get the Event ID 41 (cat 63) a few minutes into the game and the PC restarts. I read a few posts on TH forums where the root cause was determined to be a faulty PSU. I got the following readings from CPUID HW Monitor while running the game:

**MB Voltages**
CPU V Core: 0.90V
VIN1: 1.49V
+3.3V: 1.92
+5V: 3.43V
+12V: 8.16V
-12V: -2.16V
-5V: -3.12V
+5V VCCH: 2.04V
VBAT: 1.64V

*Temps*
CPU temps (min - max): 26C - 30C on all 6 cores

**GPU Voltage**
VIN0: 0.99V
Temps (min - max): 33C - 50C
Fan (min - max): 1260 RPM - 1380 RPM
FANPWM (min - max): 30% - 34%

The voltages seem low. Do the numbers indicate a faulty PSU? Or, is this normal behavior, where the PSU only delivers what is required by the components at that given time?

Chassis temp (as shown by the sensor provided in the Z9 chassis): 28C

Please let me know if these are normal, and if I need to replace my PSU (along with any recommendations on a reliable brand).

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
SB

Yup, looks like voltages dropping under load, the PSU isn't able to keep up with the requirement. Suggestion would be going for a Corsair .
But before you jump to that remedy, I'd suggest going through this thread

Hi Alyoksha,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've looked at the two threads you mentioned and have ruled out RAM and any settings (I have not overclocked and my BIOS settings are default). So the evidence does point to the PSU as you suggested. I have one question before proceeding further:

I use the CPUID Hardware Monitor utility. The voltages I mentioned in my original post are the same for Current, Min, and Max. There's no change even when I run intensive games on max display settings. Do these normally fluctuate? Thanks again.

Best Regards,
SB

Yes, the current ones change, the min and max usually stay the same. The Current readings SHOULD change with intensive activity.
