core i7 4790 vs. core i5 4590

For gaming? No, hyperthreading is not important.

Let me explain this properly. Most games today require powerful GPU and CPU with solid single cores, and are not optimized to utilize more than 4 cores. Intel's hyperthreading tech helps each physical core to act as 2 different cores, therefore 2X the performance.

But this feature is not utilized by almost any games available today. There are however some exceptions. You don't need to spend $100+ more on 4 threads which won't be utilized by the games.

However, there're some exceptions, a well known being the BF4 which utilize all cores of the CPU along with hyperthreading.

But, taking your choices in consideration, the i5 is a quad core and very much powerful, it can even play BF4...

But, taking your choices in consideration, the i5 is a quad core and very much powerful, it can even play BF4 without any problems. This difference in performance in BF4 can be seen only in CPUs with less than 3GHz cores, and i5 is very safely above that.

The i7 is awesome for VMs, Video rendering, VFX, etc which are CPU intensive tasks and can really take advantage of the hyperthreads.

By CPU intensive tasks I don't mean converting some videos or Photoshop, I mean some serious VFX or 3D development.

So i5 is a very much viable option and rightly above the i7 in terms of only gaming. And by that, I mean real good gaming with high-ultra 50-60FPS on FHD if you have a powerful enough GPU. It can also do multi tasking and CPU intensive tasks with ease, but yes comparatively is less than i7 in really CPU intensive tasks.

So I'd say get an i5, an i7 just for gaming is illogical. Hope this helps :)

Conclusion: i7 is better for editing and stuff like that,while the i5 is better for gaming. :)
