That would depend on your intentions. If you want to overclock really high, the formula may be a better option, and you could get one of the GTX 780 models that are well known to be good for overclocking instead of a 780Ti, such as the EVGA ACX versions.

The Formula won't OC higher than the Hero, it pretty much just looks better. the 780ti will actually give you a decent performance increase over the 780. :)

I strongly recommend you do not get the gtx 780 ti. This video card only has 3 gb vram at 384 bit the ps4 has 8gb vram and 6 gb useable vram. All ports from the ps4 will use more vram than the gtx 780 ti can handle on 1920x1080 causing stuttering (e.g. watchdogs, wolfenstein etc.) Please wait until 6 gb - 8gb cards come out by Nvidia and AMD. If you cannot wait consider at least 4 gb cards with 512 bit or greater, else you will regret it. Do not listen to those who tell you 3 gb is enough, below is a list of what happened to those who listened:

1. gtx 580 1.5 gb vram - obsolete within 2 years due to vram constraints, gtx 580 3 gb just became obsolete due to vram constraints
2. gtx 680 2 gb vram - obsolete within 1.5 year due to vram constraints, gtx 680 4 gb still capable of handling games.
3. prediction - gtx 780 ti - obsolete within 1 year (November 2013 release date), already can't handle 2 games.

Furthermore due to vram constraints 2 gtx 780 ti s in sli will not reduce stuttering. This is because vram is mirrored in sli. The above is advice is for 1080, for those who have 4 k monitors the gtx 780 ti is already obsolete, even worse 2 x 780 ti s in sli are already obsolete. I feel sorry for the people who thought 3 gb was sufficient so they wasted their money on the second most expensive standalone card (dual cards not considered) to play on high settings not ultra.

As per my post it can't handle watchdogs or wolfenstein on ultra, 2 780 ti s in sli can't either. Remember watch dogs is optimised for Nvidia cards as well, so the future does not look good for the gtx 780 ti. This is the first time in a long long time, I think since oblivion where a graphics card was outdated within less than a year.

Watchdogs was badly coded, link me the benchmarks of watchdogs with a 780ti please? Same eith wolfenstein if you don't mind and outdated? It can run 4k at 50fpd

Its not the maximum frame rate you should be looking at but the minimum when trying to look for stuttering, that is why amd cards used to suck in crossfire (7990 probably still will once driver support expires :p ) because they had periods where frame rate dropped causing stuttering. I'm warning people to hold out Nvidia fan or AMD fan until at least 6 gb and 8 gb cards come out :) .

No mate just wait for the gtx 880 series or whatever amd releases in counter.
If you don't believe me look at Tom's hardware watchdogs frame time variance:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/watch-dogs-pc-perfo...
The author says:
Frame time variance is a mess in this chart, though if you focus only on the higher-performance cards, it's not as bad. In short, Nvidia's overclocked GeForce GTX Titan is the only option approaching a truly smooth result. Hint Hint 6 gb vram and looks like that's not enough either.

False.

VRAM of the referenced GPUs has nothing to do with performance limitations, period. For example, there is no different between the performance of a 2GB 770 and a 4GB 770, because the GPU technology and possibly hardware/software limitations cannot utilize more than 2GB anyway.

My prediction is that the GTX 780 ti, 780, 770 and similar will all be obsolete within 1-2 years of each other, and that will NOT be next year.

Saying that the 780ti will be obsolete in one year is a bold statement. As for your other comments - Watch dogs performance issues is a prime example of bloated, poorly written code, and nothing else.

Instead of saying the 780ti is already obsolete, I view the current situation as follows:
GPUs are not able to currently process the latest games at ultra high-res because the technology isn't there yet. You can do quad sli titans or other ridiculous configs across 3 monitors, and you are still getting sub 100 FPS constantly. Adding 20GB of RAM isn't going to resolve the problem.

Now back to the original question : 780ti is the best single GPU card available now, and will be faster on any Z97 motherboard than the 780, including the 100$ entry level Z97 vs a 300$ waste of money "high end" maximus vii formula. Haswell CPUs are limited by heat. You can spend 200$ more on a motherboard and get MAYBE another 100-200mhz out of your CPU on a good day, if you are lucky depending on the piece of silicon lottery you purchase.
