What CPU should i get for r9 290

Solution

No, the 1220 v3 is not hyperthreaded, it is only a quad core, like the i5's. The Xeon 1230v3 is a much better buy, as it is essentially a slightly underclocked i7-4770.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230 V3 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($248.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $248.98

The reason I said that about the xeon because generally the "i" CPU's are what you would choose if you are a gamer.

The Xeon would game excellently. Given that they are about the same price, I would get the Xeon.

You will then have double the threads with Hyperthreading, and overall system mutlitasking performance will hugely improve and gaming performance will slightly improve.

You will also not need to get a Z97 motherboard and cooler, as you can't overclock it, so it will save you some money.

Thats not true, from a realistic point of view. As a gamer, you will be getting a discrete GPU, therefore no need for an intergrated one. Therefore the i-series locked CPU's have no advantage over the xeons, while the xeon's price is lower.
