Do I need to connect power connectors to both power slots on my r9 280x?

It has a 6 pin and an 8pin power slot both next to each other. My PSU has a 6 pin connector and on the same cable there is a 6pin+2pin connector. The manual of the video card only instructs me to connect the power lead if there is one Co I'm unsure whether I need to use them all or only one.

Just use the one 8 pin slot.

You need to connect both connectors (6 pin + 8 pin) at same time to R9 280X to make it work. I've edited this post after checking various manufacturers' websites.

Surely it would be a better idea to just plug them both in. Doesn't sound right to plug in just the 8 pin....?

I own an r9 280x, you have to plug an 8 pin and the 6 pin as well.
The 8 pin goes on the left and the 6 on the right when the card is installed.
