Best low profile RAM to be compatible with Ripjaws

Hey everyone.

Setup is as follows:
AMD Phenom IIx4 965BE (Might eventually go to an FX processor, but this has been great at 4.0GHz for a couple years now)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 MoBo

I'm considering upgrading my RAM from the 2x4 Ripjaws 1600MHz CAS-9 to 16GB because when playing titanfall, windowed (Dual monitors) with Chrome open with a handful of tabs, it's using about 75-80% of it. Normally, I'd just say, "duh, I'll just get the matching set to double the amount", but unfortunately, I have a Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler and it would hit any ram that's much higher than generic with heat spreaders because it sits right over the last slot.

I was considering some Team Vulcan with same voltage and timings as the g.skill, and then I saw g.skill Ares with the same specs and a small heat spreader. I read some reviews on this that said it was unreliable or something else that's a bit over my head. I don't overclock my RAM, but I want high quality and compatibility with what I already have.

Here are the two choices I had so far. Someone please tell me which would be best or if I should go with something else altogether. I prefer not to spend more than $80 on 2x4gb, but $5 more won't hurt.I'm so bummed at the prices of RAM. I bought my Ripjaws 2.5 years ago for under $50...As far as I can tell the only difference between the two types of RAM in each brand is the color. Am I wrong? Thank you.

Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.
It is safer to get what you need in one kit.
This is particularly true if you will be using 4 sticks.
The ram must all be capable of being managed with the same specs.

Heat spreaders are mostly marketing. They are only useful for record seeking overclockers.

Ideally, you should replace your 8gb with a 16gb kit of 2 x 8gb and sell your old ram.
If that is not possible, then go ahead and try a second 8gb kit.
Test with memtest86+
I would buy a kit from G.skil with the exact same specs that you already have.
They are most likely to help if you have a problem.

Yea, I don't think heat spreaders are necessary either in my situation. They are mostly for looking cool IMO. Well do you have any recommendations for an inexpensive 16GB pack (without head spreaders)? If I could sell my Ripjaws, it would make buying all new RAM much easier.

This doesn't seem possible. The corner of the fan bracket is about 1.5mm from my Ripjaws in slot 3. Are you talking about dual channel or quad? Because, I am looking at increasing capacity by going quad, but looking online it does seem that getting 2x8 is about the same price as 4x4.

I just need to find a buyer for my Ripjaws to make this an economical solution...I may just keep them for the next build either way...

Most set the EVO up with the fan's blowing to the back of the case so the front fan is over the DRAM, which directs all the hot air to the back of the case where there generally is an exhaust port, didn't know you had it oriented bottom to exhaust out the top, sorry

No problem at all! I didn't think it could mount in that direction. I'll take another look at the mounting brackets to be sure. If I can mount it that way, it would fix the fan rattle! (Fingers crossed)

FYI, I emailed g.skill support about the problem with buying two different sets of the same ram and this was their response. I think I'll be buying a 16GB pack of Radeon RAM instead of trying to sell this and all that...

Dear Customer

There is a high chance they will be incompatible if the existing kit was purchased 3 years ago. If they can work together, you would need to set them at a lower frequency like DDR3-1333.

Rather than mix matching, a complete 16GB kit is recommended. The G.Skill RipJaws series is very popular, so I'm sure you can sell the original 8GB kit at a good price, or keep them as back up.

Or if you would like, you can attempt adding another kit, if it doesn't work, send the existing kit in for RMA and we can exchange it for a more recent kit that hopefully matches with the new one purchased.

Thank you
GSKILL SUPPORT
