Option 1: i5 4690K + Stock 780 Ti + MSI Z97 G55 SLI (entry-level z97 board)
Option 2: i7 4790K + custom R9 290 + Asus Z97-WS (flagship Z97 workstation board)

My needs: my needs are mainly productivity focused, with 1080p game recording, youtube video editing, a lot of essays, research, and esspecially, a ton of school coding assignments.

I am only gaming at 1080p and will stick to it for the next few years. I am gonna be overclocking so the Asus might come in useful.

Which of the two is better, considering I am stuck at 1080p

Thanks for the responses
Much appreciated

Both the R9 290 and 780 Ti are very powerful cards, FHD is really ice cream for them with those CPUs.
Considering you're not going to get 4k anytime soon, I'd definitely go with the option 2 hands down.

You won't find a more productive CPU than the i7 4790K, and with that Workstation class MoBo, you'll be more than happy of your (and my) choice :)

The hyperthreads will make any sort of editing, recording, etc a piece of cake.

Expect solid 60+ FPS on Ultra settings on FHD with option 2!

I would say option 2 would work well, but you do not need that expensive of a motherboard. Go with an Asrock Z97 extreme4, and use the saved money towards a nice SSD.

Adding to that, I've a R9 290, and work with 4k display, 4790k and lots of VFX and graphic rendering softwares, no lag even in 4k with that card!

Look at my sig, I got a similar setup as option 2 with a different MoBo, but that Asus is just a better one from my MoBo. So I'd say OCing to 4.5GHz will be another easy task here.

Also, I do a lot of VFX and other video editing myself (its my field of study). And I can say, that card will smoke a FHD, no matter what kind of Game, 3D development/ rendering/ VFX/ VM software you throw at it, with the i7.

It just adds my inclination towards option 2 here :)

Go for option2, the i7 will definitely help wolitg your work and also helps alot with recording, the 780 ti is overkill anyway so a 290 would be better, just get a sapphire one doe
