I want to hook up my Wii U with one of my monitors I use for my PC.
But they both don't support HDMI even thought they are modern monitors and the Wii U only has a HDMI output.

So I was wondering what my best option would be.
I could buy a new monitor which does support HDMI or I could buy one of those converters.
Would a simple DVI to HDMI cable work (http://www.amazon.com/DVI-HDMI-Cable-6ft-Male-Male/dp/B0002CZHN6) with a Wii U or would I need some sort of converter thing?

Sorry if this is obvious but I don't know much about video and monitors.

I'd buy a new monitor with HDMI. HDMI is newer and just better in general for gaming. It is more suggested than VGA or DVI and it is obviously more futureproof. You can get good BenQ monitors for around 100. Plus I don't think HDMI to DVI would transfer audio.
