Hey,

I wanted a little advice, I have never built my own system before but have decided to bite the bullet and do it. I’m pretty keen to get going and was wondering if this build would be decent or if there are any components I am better off looking at or changing, my budget is around £1000 to £1200. My system will be heavily used for graphics work, Photoshop etc, video editing, Autocad, 3dsMax and rendering and obviously gaming whenever I get the chance!

Case: NZXT phantom 630 £116.21

Motherboard: MSI Z97 GAMING 5 £107

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz 8MB S1150 'Devils Canyon' Processor £249

RAM: G.Skill RipjawsX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit £126.98

GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC 4096MB £296

PSU: EVGA 850W SuperNOVA Gold PSU £95

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB £84

HD: Seagate 1TB Barracuda Internal Hard Drive £45

Total = £1118.21

o/s Windows 8.1

No monitor or other peripherals needed.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

You should be absolutely fine with a 750W EVGA Supernova G2 with just a single R9 290. The Seagate Barracuda 1Tb drives tend to have noisy heads, the WD Caviar blue's are apparently nicer in that regard.

Looks pretty good. If you plan to overclock then you would need an aftermarket cooler.

For the PSU, as stated above, this would be enough for your system:

Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£80.62 @ Amazon UK)

If you were planning on adding a second r9 290 in the future then you would want around a 1kw psu.

Thanks, great help, I would definitely consider adding another r9 290 in the future, any recommendations for the PSU then? I did forget to mention I was also looking at the Noctua NH-D14 as I have heard its pretty decent.

Thanks

The same model but the 1000w version is a good choice:

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£138.12 @ Scan.co.uk)

The Supernova G2s are good quality and come with 10yr warranties.

The NH-D14 is a good cooler, Noctua also has the D15 available which is supposed to be better but I haven't looked into its performance much yet.

Edit: Also the platinum rated psu is only a few pounds more:
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£141.66 @ CCL Computers)
