I have an Asus A8R32-MVP deluxe motherboard with an AMD Athlon X2 64 Dual core processor 4200+ and 2 GB DDR SDRAM. All this is powered from a Corsair 450W PSU. I recently installed Windows 7 Pro on it which worked like a charm, but this morning when I logged on it was stuck loading on the Welcome screen and then crashed with a bluescreen that flashed for about a half second before dying. I tried booting again but it got stuck at the BIOS screen where it was trying to detect the Third IDE Master, where it seemed to freeze. I powered it off completely and tried to start it again, but it kept getting stuck there. I switched the SATA plug that the hard drive was connected to to no avail. I then cleared the CMOS, but when I went to turn it on it would remain a black screen and never even get to the BIOS POST screen. The CPU fan shut off a few seconds after first powering it on and would not start again. I have tried to reclear the CMOS but to no avail. Help?

Solution
No problem! Glad the issue is resolved! Hope it stays that way too! haha.

Nope, it just stays like that until I turn it off. No beeping, flashing, etc. The case fans still run but the CPU fan shuts off.

What are the specs of your computer? Power Supply, Graphics, CPU, etc.

Because what it sounds like is a voltage reader throwing up an alarm causing the mobo to stop functioning to prevent damage.

But let me know your specs and anything else you think I should know and we will go from there.

Thanks,

Nub

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ 2.2 GHz Processor
GPU: PNY GeForce 8400 GS 256MB
PSU: Corsair CS450M (450 Watt)
RAM: 2x 1 GB PC3200 DDR 400Mhz
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB

It used to be working fine until Windows crashed, and I hadn't made any hardware changes after I installed Windows, so I would be a bit confused if it was a voltage issue.
FYI I don't know why Windows crashed, as I didn't have enough time to read the bluescreen before it shut off.

Do you not know your Motherboard?

And ok. I mean it looks like your specs check out alright. It's a pretty old build, but if it gets the job done. Umm I Would attempt to reinstall windows again, we will perform a wipe and reinstall with a FULL reformat.

To do this:
-When the Windows 7 Installer screen, press Shift + F10 to open the command prompt.
-Type "diskpart"
-Press Enter
-Type "select disk 0" (Assuming that is the drive you want or is the HDD, type "List Disk" to see the drives)
-Press Enter
-Type "clean all" (This will wipe the drive of all data)
-Press Enter
-Type "create partition primary" (This will create a new partition on your drive)
-Press Enter
-Type "format fs=ntfs" (This will perform a FULL format of the drive rather than the quick)
-Press Enter
-Type "active" (So a boot can be placed on it)
-Press Enter
-Type "Exit" Press "Enter", Type "Exit" Press "Enter" (This will leave the command prompt.

Then continue on with the installation, selecting your partition as the install path. This should be a flawless installation of Windows 7 since the Full Format scans for any errors on the drive.

Let me know what happens, if it still crashes after the reinstall and full format, it could be hardware related.

My motherboard is in the title of this thread... an ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe.

But my more immediate problem is that I can't even get the computer to boot because when the power is turned on all that happens is a few fans start running but the CPU fan never turns on, and I never see a BIOS POST screen or anything like that.

Hmm. It could be that the CPU Fan itself is just dead. Either that or the slot it's in is bad.

Either or, if it shuts down before you can even get to bios, the CPU is overheating and the computer shuts down. If your BIOS has a fan read, you can see if the fan is even being picked up.

Let me know.

It shuts down before I can get to the BIOS. It will just stay off for about 15 or so minutes before the computer turns off. If I try to turn it back on immediately it will shut off again almost instantly. Using a IR thermometer I can see the bottom part of the heatsink reaching about 50 degrees Celsius before the computer turns off, which seems to indicate that its overheating. I will try replacing the fan and see if that makes a difference.

Okay, so replacing the fan didn't work, but I did unplug the hard drive from the slot it was plugged into and that allowed the computer to boot normally without any issues. I plugged it back in to make sure that that was the true cause and sure enough, it didn't boot after I plugged it back in. I moved the cable to a different plug and now it seems to be working all fine. It seems to be a problem with the SATA plug on the motherboard. I will have to investigate further, but for now, my computer works again! Thanks for all your advice nubbsauce!
