Upgrade U_12.04 to U_14.04 almost perfect

August 12, 2014 2:20:00 PM

Gents: Legacy AMD965/ MSI-gd70/ NV650:24" Dell hardware.

Judging U_14.04LTS to be last & best of a breed I upgraded from U12.04LTS as soon as the prompt appeared on my software manager.

DLoad and install took about three (3) hours; I answered YES to the several unknowable tek-options during download. Upon reboot I find most everything came-along with the upgrade including several GNOME_GUI options on the login_screen; I chose "classic" or suchlike cause I want GNOME_2 behavior.

Everything worked the-first-time, save one item: that failure being the **multiple WORKSPACE** option. I ran four (4) on Ubuntu_12.04, they appeared automagically & each was cued with a grayish rectangle on the lower taskbar. Click-and-choose. But, Only one (1) appears in U_14.04 and when you clue the pop-up window to change that number it always reverts to one (1) and never even temporarily displays more than one workspace-prompt in the low right taskbar.

Going to SYSTOOLS --> PREF-->APPEAR & choosing "multiple workspaces" accomplishes nothing.

With luck I am messing up something simple. Any clue appreciated.

So I learn: I am running GNOME in **flashback** / Metacity-mode and get all four requested workspaces. That's good. Compiz-mode does NOT give me the multiple workspaces (so easily anyway). BTW: FFox, Chromium and Opera are all supported in U_14.04.

In both mode4s I have lost contact with my several WINE programs ... they each appear listed under Wine, but do not run when asserted. Myn fav midi-player and sound-library TIMIDITY has also vanished.

Another update. Re-installing WINE using Synaptic rescued SPICE (works again w/o re-install) , but did not rescue
Adobe Illustrator.

Updating again .. with great sadness I observe that ELECTRICSHEEP has been removed from the Canonical list of U_14.04 maintained software. Why? Will it not run-from-CLI-terminal as it did in U_12.04? The Electricsheep website suggests a Linux lusr may DLoad & compile a program version for Ubuntu_14.04. NO that's not going to happen and it's reported to fail anyway.

Some sites advise that Ubuntu is submitting to Poetterings demands for a more BRANDED Gnome experience .... and Poettering hates sheep as they do not wear RedHats --- not that he should sit impaled on a notched bamboo stake or anything ... surely not ...

Updating again: Built-in midi.player will not work. Claims it missing stuff, but I thought I grabbed the Ubuntu bag-of-media. VLC(?) attempts to DLoad "helper" files , but dload fails.
I found my legacy TIMIDITY and that works on downloaded midi-files, but I do not have the legacy GUI front-end nor the extended sound-files. A good sound-card or the extended Timidity sound-files really make a difference for those who appreciate the legacy format.

New update: new kernal version (3.13.xxx) already DLoaded. Still no built-in MIDI_support. Have not yet
checked DVDs --- but music CDs do play.

New update: Have Upgraded my newer XEON/Msi-Z77A-gd55/NV660/Auria 27" system to Ubuntu_14.04. Nearly weightless process taking less-than 2 hours. Running GNOME/Metacity/flashback ... I DID have to reinstall WINE ... which recovered installed programs w/o reloading. I may nitpik later, but truth for casual Linux lusrs gives three cheers for Canonical.
