Masking Skype Connection

My landlord blocks Skype (or rather, we can use it, but we get fined if we get caught). I was wondering if there's any way to mask my internet connection so that Skype-related activity doesn't show up in my traffic. They control the internet, but the router we use is controlled by me. Will a simple VPN do the trick, or do I have to do something else?

Note: We have our own modem in our apartment. They can probably check the traffic on that one modem. This is why I think a VPN won't help.

Thanks.

They would only see the traffic between your machine and the VPN service in whatever country that is. The traffic is encrypted so there is no way to tell what you are sending to the vpn server.

If you actually have a "modem" ie is it a cable modem or DSL it is highly unlikely the landlord can see what you are doing. They would have to have the equipment to be a ISP which is really stupid in something like a apartment complex because of the cost or they would have to have very specialized equipment to monitor the wires between your modem and the ISP. This is also very expensive equipment.

Now if what you have is a router with normal ethernet ports that they would connect to say a switch they could monitor what you are doing...

But doesn't the VPN just mask where you're connecting from? If there is one modem for every apartment, they can still see who's using Skype, but it will just look like I'm using Skype from Zimbabwe. Unless my idea of how a VPN works is different.

Skype traffic though looks a lot like bit torrent. It does open a connection to the main skype server but the actual calls and other data flows over random ports. You pretty much see connection being made to random addresses most the time. It would actually be very hard to say for sure any traffic was actually skype and not some other protocol.
