I just recently upgraded to a new dual band router and while using the traffic monitor ive noticed all of my devices will use only the 2.4 ghz band no matter how close I am to the router. When I have the bands set as two different logins I can connect to the 5ghz fine but when they are set as one none of my devices use it.

It's a setting on your device most likely of which band to use.
It's also possible your router defaults to 2.4 to improve device compatibility, you might consider just keeping the two different logins and using the one you want based on what the device performs best with.
